From October 2024 to March 2025, a six-month bird conservation education program—funded by International Bird Partners—successfully empowered students in two Cameroonian schools: GHS Bonakanda, and Muea High School.Through a blend of classroom lessons, birdwatching trips, and binocular training, students gained practical skills and knowledge to protect local bird species. The initiative sparked environmental awareness and built a new generation of bird conservation advocates.
Post-training evaluations at pilot school GHS Bonakanda revealed striking improvements: understanding of birds’ ecological roles surged by 46%, while 96% of students joined newly formed bird clubs to drive conservation efforts. Interest in bird protection soared, with 50% of participants rating their enthusiasm at the highest-level post-program. “The training transformed how students view birds—from indifference to seeing them as vital to our environment,” said a program coordinator.
Despite challenges like budget constraints and scheduling delays, the initiative allocated 430,000 FCFA toward educational materials, field equipment, and student engagement. Organizers now seek additional funding (600,000 FCFA) to expand to three more schools and host community birdwatching events.
“This program proves that youth are powerful ambassadors for conservation,” the team concluded, thanking International Bird Partners for their support. Plans include long-term impact assessments at Muea and Beps High Schools over the next three years.
