The Community-Based Mangrove Restoration Project, supported by Purpose Earth, is a pioneering initiative dedicated to restoring and conserving mangrove ecosystems along the Tiko coastline. Mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining coastal biodiversity, protecting shorelines from erosion, and supporting local livelihoods.
Our project aims to rehabilitate 30 hectares of degraded mangrove areas by planting and nurturing seedlings while also educating local communities about the importance of mangrove conservation. So far, we have educated over 50 community members, planted 1,200 seedlings, and established a nursery for future planting activities. By engaging residents in restoration activities and training them to become stewards of the mangroves, we promote a sense of ownership and responsibility that ensures long-term care and protection of these vital ecosystems.
The project also focuses on enhancing biodiversity, utilizing mangroves’ carbon sequestration capabilities for climate change mitigation, and advocating for supportive policies. Our activities include organizing planting events, conducting workshops and seminars, providing community training, and implementing a robust monitoring system.
We collaborate with local NGOs, government agencies, and international organizations to leverage resources and expertise. Our efforts have a multifaceted impact: increased mangrove cover, improved coastal protection, enhanced community knowledge, empowered local stewards, and economic benefits through sustainable exploitation of mangrove resources and eco-tourism development.
Join us in our mission to restore and protect the vital mangrove ecosystems along the Tiko coastline.
